Known as one of the few white musicians to achieve renowned success on the R&B charts, legendary R&B singer Teena Marie died over the weekend, leaving friends, family and fans stunned all over the world just aged 54. Teena Marie has left a lasting influence on some of today’s contemporary artists, who immediately reacted to her death.

Diddy tweeted: “R.I.P Teena Marie. God Bless. Damn I just saw her the other day.” Mary J. Blige also tweeted, “Rest in peace Teena Marie,” Blige wrote. “My Love for u is forever.” Common also explained why he felt so connected to her music. “Teena and I are both Pisces and we believe that we’ve been here before,” he tweeted. “That’s why ‘De Ja Vu’ is my favorite song.”

R&B songwriting duo Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff, who wrote hits like “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” the “Soul Train” theme song and “Back Stabbers,” remembered the singer in a statement: “We’re shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Teena Marie. She was one of the most memorable, soulful and unique R&B vocalists to come out of Motown. We send our condolences to Teena’s family, the entire Motown family and of course, our dear friend Berry Gordy.”

Marie was known for hits like “Lovergirl” and “Square Biz.” Her daughter found her dead Saturday night, Marie’s manager said. No cause of death has been released, but her publicist said Marie suffered a grand mal seizure a month ago, from which she was still recovering

Diddy, formerly known as P Diddy and Puff Daddy, thinks that British hip-hop ‘is on the verge of breaking” in the US charts.  Having worked with UK acts Tinie Tempah, Chipmunk and Skepta this is what he had to say

“I’ve always been abreast and respected the UK hip-hop scene and I look forward to great things,” he told BBC News. “I think in the past maybe some of the UK hip-hop artists weren’t as authentic to where they come from,” he said.  ”It’s all right to be from the UK and it’s all right to talk about what you want to talk about and not try to sound or be like somebody from the US.”

There is now a “self-pride in UK hip-hop”, he continued. “That’s the starting point. Hip-hop respects something that’s authentic……Just like the way in the US it took time for the south and the west coast to break, it’s the same thing and I just think that UK hip-hop is on the verge of breaking.”

In related news, Diddy plays a record label boss in movie Get Him To the Greek, which features comedian Russell Brand as wayward rock star Aldous Snow and is out in the UK on 25 June.

Diddy is relaunching his real-life music career by forming a new group called Diddy – Dirty Money, who release their new single Hello Good Morning on Monday.
